When You Can’t Just Replace the Outdoor AC Unit

We recently got a call from a homeowner — let’s call him Carl — in Baytown who asked a question we hear almost every week in the Houston area:

“Do y’all sell just the outside AC unit? A three-ton?”

Carl’s outdoor condenser was on its last legs, and he was hoping to swap out only that piece to save some money. As we started asking questions — size, type of refrigerant, and whether he wanted to change the indoor coil — the conversation quickly turned into a bigger topic:

Why We Asked About Refrigerant First

One of our first questions back to Carl was:

“What type of Freon (refrigerant) is your system using?”

Like many homeowners, he wasn’t sure. That’s completely normal. But it matters a lot, because:

  • Older systems typically use R-410A or even older R-22.
  • New systems are shifting to newer refrigerants like R-32 and R-454B.

Manufacturers have largely stopped making new outdoor units that run on R-410A. So if you’re replacing equipment now, you’re likely looking at one of the newer refrigerants — and that’s where the indoor unit comes into play.

Why New Refrigerants Change the Whole System

Carl only wanted to replace the outdoor unit, but once we confirmed we were talking about a newer-style system, we explained why that usually isn’t an option anymore.

The newer refrigerants are designed to be more environmentally friendly, but there’s a tradeoff: some of them are mildly flammable because they contain components similar to propane. To keep you safe, manufacturers build in sensors and safety controls that rely on the indoor and outdoor units talking to each other.

That means:

  • The outdoor condenser and the indoor evaporator coil must be designed to work as a set.
  • If there’s a leak indoors, sensors can shut the system down to keep refrigerant from building up inside your home.
  • Texas codes and manufacturer instructions require us to install these as a matched system for everyone’s protection.

So when Carl asked if we could sell just the outdoor unit, we had to explain that, by Texas law and manufacturer specs, we have to provide the indoor component with it. It’s for his safety and ours.

What a “Matched System” Looks Like on a Quote

Once Carl understood the safety side, his next question was the same one you might have: “Okay, so what exactly am I paying for?”

A typical replacement quote for a system using newer refrigerant will often include:

  • Outdoor condenser unit – the big unit outside.
  • Indoor evaporator coil – usually in the attic, closet, or inside the air handler.
  • Optional furnace or air handler – if you’re going for a complete system upgrade.
  • Refrigerant line set work – sometimes cleaning, modifying, or replacing lines.
  • Safety and control wiring – so leak sensors and shutoff features work properly.

With Carl, we walked through two rough price ranges over the phone:

  • A combined outdoor unit plus indoor coil at about $7,250.
  • A complete system including furnace at about $8,500.

Those are example numbers and can vary based on brand, efficiency, and installation details, but they give a sense of why “just replacing the outside” is rarely the full story anymore.

Why Bigger Isn’t Better: Sizing and Texas Humidity

Toward the end of the call, Carl asked another smart question. He was thinking about a four-ton unit for his 1,500–1,600 square foot house but had heard that could cause humidity problems.

He was right to be cautious. In our climate, an oversized system can:

  • Cool the air too quickly, without running long enough to properly remove humidity.
  • Leave the home feeling cool but clammy.
  • Stress the ductwork and returns if they’re not sized for that much airflow.

For a typical 1,500–1,600 sq. ft. home in the Houston area, we usually recommend something closer to a 3-ton or 3.5-ton system, depending on insulation, windows, and layout. That’s why we told Carl that four tons would likely be too much and could create comfort and moisture issues.

How Refrigerant Rules Affect Homeowners in Texas

Texas homeowners are feeling these refrigerant changes more and more as older systems wear out. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Fewer “mix-and-match” options – New outdoor units generally must be paired with compatible indoor coils.
  • Stricter safety requirements – Mildly flammable refrigerants mean more sensors, controls, and code inspections.
  • Upfront cost, longer-term payoff – The initial investment can be higher, but newer systems are usually more efficient and can cut operating costs.

  • Change filters regularly – usually every 1–3 months, depending on your home and filter type.
  • Keep the outdoor unit clear – trim bushes and remove debris at least 2 feet around the condenser.
  • Schedule annual maintenance – new sensors and controls should be checked by a pro each year.
  • Watch for error codes – if the system shuts off unexpectedly, don’t ignore it; leak sensors may be doing their job.

These newer systems are sophisticated, and a bit of routine maintenance helps protect your investment and keep warranties valid.
